A question I get asked a lot is, “Do you just do weddings?” It always takes me a moment to respond because the short answer is no, I don’t just do wedding flowers. In fact, sometimes I repurpose flowers to build installations outside of homeless camps. Like this morning. •
Twenty minutes or so into my setup a homeless man emerged from his tent several yards away. He went to work setting out his wet socks to dry on the lawn (damn I’m thankful for the sunshine this week!), before eventually making his way over to me. He asked if he could have a flower and if I thought it would get him out of hot water. I told him, “Depends how hot the water is,” and ain’t that the truth! He went on to tell me his lady had left him eleven years ago after he had fallen into using crack. He was clean now and he hoped that they could reconnect. He asked me what my name was and after I told him I asked for his. He told me his name was Solo. My heart broke as my mind raced; how long had he been alone on the streets? I gave him a handful of peonies- still so fragrant, and he went back to doing his laundry. I finished this floral installation at which point @deusamor.co
met me to capture it. Thanks, Catherine!
The next time someone asks me, “Do I just mostly do weddings?” I’ll still struggle to come up with a quick response but only this time I’ll be thinking of my new friend Solo and the time we met on what just happened to be Random Acts of Kindness Day.
