Press ups seem to be very popular at the moment, so I thought I’d chip in with some tips based on what I’ve seen, online and in my classes. The press up is a great bodyweight exercise, one of my favourites - when done properly... 1. Shooting the elbows out at 90° to the body. That doesn’t play to the natural range of motion of the shoulder at all, and is setting you up for shoulder injuries down the line. Keep the arms to 45°. 2. Shortening the ROM. A full press up is chest to floor, and back up to full extension of the arms, under control. It’s a lot harder, but also infinitely more effective!
3. Dropping the hips. Part of the beauty of this exercise is the core engagement, so don’t let the hips dip low, lock the core in solid and move through the ROM in a straight line.
There’s my thoughts, let me know what you think! .
