The third limb of the 8-limbed path of yoga is Asana, physical postures. Many see yoga as simply this - physical poses, and see yoga as just “exercise“. We must understand that yoga is this, as well as 7 other aspects that serve to enhance body, mind and spiritual wellness.
Asana is Sanskrit for “seat” or “posture”. When we practice yoga with awareness, we are building a good foundation, a good “seat” for ourselves, allowing for a more integrated perspective of the world around us, and a sense of connection to our environment. Consciously moving our bodies through yoga postures with awareness of our breath, builds our connection to how energy flows through us.
The benefits of practicing yoga through Asana are many - invites increased flexibility, improves balance, tones muscles, strengthens cardiovascular system, deepens our connection to stillness which translates into promoting mental and emotional well-being.
The mind-body-spirit connection to nature is profound. Ancient Yogic sages observed the aspects of nature - the postures of trees and plants, the movement of flying creatures in the air and living beings on the earth, the blossoming of flowers as yoga postures. It is Mother Nature who is our greatest teacher. 🙏💛
