The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
What feelings have been surfacing for you these days? I know for me right now it seems that “every morning is a new arrival.” Fear, anxiety, uncertainty . . . they are not visitors we want to come knocking, and yet here they are camping out at our door. Yet Rumi suggests that welcome them in! What would it be like to “meet them at the door laughing”? Inviting them in doesn’t mean that they will stay forever. After all, every human feeling we ever experience is only temporary, and it all has wisdom and something to teach us. So I would like to suggest that in addition to “treating each guest honorably,” that we also do so with compassion and gentleness. We are all in uncharted waters with this new experience of a pandemic. These unexpected visitors will surprise us. How we choose to answer the door in greeting will be up to us.
