Take your power back. Be Yourself.
People often pretend to be something or someone they’re not. But it’s important to stay true to who you are and be your authentic self.
It’s natural to want to be accepted, but the key to staying true to yourself is not worrying too much about what others think or believe. People should accept you for who you are, so don’t waste your time on those who don’t.
I lived in Manhattan for 12 years. I went there for college and worked for high-profile newspapers, chasing breaking news stories and writing features. It was fun for a while, but by year seven, I was getting frustrated and tired, and I really wanted to leave. But I was scared. I was worried what people would think if I left the Big Apple behind for a quieter life.
But while visiting my parents in my hometown in Florida, I decided on a whim that it was finally time to make a move. It was March, and we took a trip to the beach. I vividly remember thinking how great it would be to live there, near the water, where it was warm. I couldn’t bear the thought of going back to New York, where it was still snowing.
I did, but a few weeks later I booked a one-way ticket back to Florida, without a job and without a plan. I know many people thought I had made a huge mistake in leaving my big city life behind – I even thought that myself for quite some time. But as I adjusted to my new, quieter life, I realized that I had made the best decision for myself. I’m calmer, I’m happier, and I’m so grateful to be close to my family again.
Nearly a decade after leaving New York, I still get questions about why I did it. But I know I made the right decision for myself, and that’s what matters most.
