TITLE: Old Growth Stump, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington, 2019
SUBJECT: A black and white intimate landscape photograph of an old-growth stump found along Forest Road 52 (Skate Creek Road) in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington.
EXIF: Nikon Z7, Nikkor Z 24-70/4 S lens, ISO 64, 29 mm, ƒ8, 1/6 second.
As you travel the forests of the Pacific Northwest, you occasionally see remnants of the mighty forests that once were. Along the rainy Pacific coast, we had giants, not much smaller in scale than the redwood, where two men could lay head to head in the undercut. In the foothills of the cascades, the old-growth trees were smaller, but giants in their own world.
Unfortunately, most of these trees of the past are gone, consisting of a few remaining specimens in national parks or far in the roadless wilderness areas.
I found this old stump from the past while exploring the backroads along Forest Road 52 (Skate Creek Road) in the Lewis County between Ashford and Packwood, Washington.
Prints are available for purchase. See blog link in bio.
